Day 1, Fall 2010

Wow, it begins again. My 107 doesn't start until 6 -- it was a scheduling experiment, but the class is completely full. I showed up to class right at 6 and found my wonderful interns there which made me happy. The room is too small for all of us, so I will have to ask about finding a new space.

I went over the syllabus and then had the students interview each other and then introduce their partner to the class. This functions as my ice breaker and also gets the students used to speaking to each other and the class as a whole. Here are the interview questions: Name, year, major, place you were born, place you would most like to live, where do you want to be in 5 years? What was your favorite subject, why? Least why? Best writing experience? Worst? Best thing you’ve ever read. What do you know about writing? How do you know this? What don’t you know but would like to?

I put everything they say about what they do know and what they would like to know about writing on the board.

I am always happy with how this activity works. The students look so guarded at the beginning of the class an end up relaxed by the end. Seems like a good start.

  1. I was surprised that your class starts so late. It will be interesting to hear how the late time affects how much they talk (if at all--graduate students, after all, go to class late, and most of us talk).
